This 4-credit hybrid option CMTE course explores the impact of a patient’s communicative abilities when planning for and providing music therapy services. This course encourages interdisciplinary collaboration between music therapists and speech-language pathologists to optimize outcomes for the youngest to the oldest of patients. Participants will gain knowledge and skills necessary to incorporate communication strategies to benefit patients and their families.
Jann Fujimoto is a speech-language pathologist who helps children become confident communicators. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from Indiana University where she played oboe in the concert band and played mellophone in the university’s marching and pep bands. She earned a Master of Science in Communication Disorders from the University of Texas at Dallas. Jann is a licensed Wisconsin speech-language pathologist and holds a certificate of clinical competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Over her twenty-five-year career, she has worked in Birth-to-Three, early intervention, school, home health, skilled nursing, and private practice settings. She’s worked via telepractice since 2014, serving schools and families in Bahamas, Canada, China, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Kenya, and Wisconsin.
Learner Objectives:
- Prepare for a patient’s communication strengths and barriers to maximize patient
outcomes in music therapy. - Compare and contrast services provided by a music therapist and a speech-language
pathologist. - Recognize how cognitive, communication, and dysphagia statuses (such as aphasia, apraxia,
dementia, dysphagia, tracheostomy) affect a patient’s ability to communicate effectively
